Mom + Dad // This is Forty Six
These are my parents. Today, they celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary. FORTY SIX YEARS.
I wanted to do something special for them. So, naturally, I planned a photoshoot. I think the last time they had professional photos taken was likely their wedding. Yeah, forty six years ago. I think it was about time they got some updated portraits. They loved every minute. I think I loved it more.
I surprised them with a fully styled session. They arrived at my home the morning of the session not knowing what to expect. Not even knowing what they would be wearing. While my mom had her fabulous hair and makeup done by Ana of BU4ME Services, I styled my dad. The fedora nearly brought me to tears with laughter. When both were ready, we set them up for their reveal. The laughter was nearly uncontrollable!
You never have to tell these two to smile. They’re basically smiling ALL THE TIME. Their session was no different. Smiling from ear to ear, I soon realized that my parents are so easy to photograph.
So, let me tell you about my parents and what makes these two so special. Well, other than being my parents which is pretty darn special to me.
Although both born in Portugal, my mother in the Azores, these lovebirds fell in love in their homeland of Angola, Africa. They were married in Luanda where they lived, and became parents to my Sister, Carla, just a year later. Shortly after, while expecting my brother, Paul, they found themselves fleeing their home and a civil war as refugees. They found refuge in Brazil where they remained for the next 11 years. Their families scattered throughout the world. I joined the group as their last child just a few years before we migrated to the United States.
These two have both lost everything and earned everything they’ve ever had. They’ve worked great jobs and not so great jobs. They’ve started over countless times. Sometimes in the face of some pretty scary situations. They’ve raised three pretty decent human beings (I mean, I think we’re alright). They’ve survived cancer and braved heart surgeries. Despite whatever they are dealing with in their lives, they are always two of the most charismatic people I know. They are magnetic. I often joke that they’ve made a new friend at every checkout line they’ve ever been in. This is sort of a joke but it’s actually true too. In the mood for conversation? Call my parents.
They are pretty awesome and they have taught me so so much. Maybe more than I even let them know (I’m the stubborn one).
These are just some highlights, really. These two could write a book, but if you know my parents and their gift of gab, it would be 864,369 pages long. Joking, nope, not joking.
If this is what 46 years of marriage looks like, sign me up.
